Plan Ahead - Let someone
know the route you are planning to follow. Do not deviate from
that route without notifying someone. If you do not arrive, rescuers
will know where to look for you.
Prepare and pack your
Winter Storm Kit
Check the route of
travel before departing - road and weather conditions
Check fluid levels
regularly
Wear your safety belt
Allow greater distances
between you and other vehicles when driving. Remember stopping
distances can triple because of adverse road conditions.
Accelerate slowly to
avoid loss of traction and the subsequent loss of control on ice
and snow covered surfaces.
Pass with care - remember
passing lanes are not typically maintained as well as driving
lanes during bad weather.
Expect the unexpected.
Try to avoid situations where you have to make a quick move; your
vehicle may not stop or turn the way you want.
Look further ahead
in traffic than you normally do. Actions by cars and other trucks
will alert you quicker to problems and give you a spli-second
extra time to react safely.
Stop frequently to
clear your lights, especially taillights.
Use low beam headlights
for best visibility.
Dress warmly.
Make sure your cell
phone is fully charged.
Listen to the radio
for updated weather forecasts.
Seek shelter immediately
if the storm worsens, this might keep you from being stranded.
