The Citizen's Band Radio (CB radio) is the tool used by truck drivers and others to communicate with each other while driving. Channel 19 is the most used by truckers.
The lingo used by truckers does not make sense to a lot of people. There is a need for everyone to remember to be courteous and respectful when using this mode of communication.
Users should remember:
- There are many people listening to every word you say.
- Some of those listening are children.
- What you say and how you say it reflects on the industry as a whole.
- If you must speak negatively, please use a channel other than 19.
- Beware of scams.
Good uses for the CB radio include:
Accidents - advising other drivers of potential traffic problems.
Traffic - advising other drivers of traffic delays and the source.
Directions - if lost, you can get directions on the CB. Use extreme caution when using the CB for directions, you might end up in a dangerous situation. It might be safer to stop at a truck stop and ask for directions.
Driver Fatigue - talking with other drivers may help you to stay awake.
Emergencies - properly used, you can request asssitance if you are involved in an accident, are having a medical emergency or your truck is broken down.According to the FCC the CB radio is NOT to be used to:
- conduct activity which is against federal, state or local law.
- advertise or solicit the sale of any goods or services.
- transmit music, whistling, sound effects or any material to amuse or entertain.
- advertise a political candidate or political campaign.
- communicate or attempt to communicate with a CB station more than 153.3 miles away.
- transmit obscene, indecent or profane words, language or meaning.
- interfere intentionally with others using the CB to communicate.
- transmit any sound effect for the sole purpose of attracting attention.
- transmit one-way communications, except for emergency.

You must at all times and on all channels give priority to emergency communications.

Conversations must be limited to no more than 5 continuous minutes, after which you are not to transmit again for at least one minute. To learn more about the FCC Rules for the CB radio, visit the FCC's website:
