Everyone needs
to rethink our walking habit around large vehicles.
We can help
to avoid trouble when walking near large vehicles by keeping in mind
the fact the driver of a truck or bus has several "blind spots".
These are areas around the vehicle that the driver simply cannot see,
even with the specialized side view and fish eye mirrors that are
often found on vehicles today.
TIPS
- Remember to wait until
a bus leaves the bus stop before trying to cross the street.
- Don't cross in front
of, or behind, a bus stopped at a bus stop.
- As the bus moves away
from the curb the driver will be watching the traffic, not the people
that disembarked. Stay on the sidewalk until the bus leaves.
Know the No-Zone
Behind the Vehicle
- Don't race behind
a truck as it backs up, because the driver cannot see you.
- Remember that a truck
or bus that is still at the moment may be preparing to move, especially
in a crowded city or parking lot.
- Stay clear of vehicles
that are backing up.
Side Blind Spots
- When a large vehicle
makes a turn at a street corner the rear wheels may "off
track" and run across the curb. Pedestrians must use caution
when waiting at a corner to cross. If a large truck or bus approaches
and appears to be making a turn, take a few steps back for your
safety.
- Buses and large trucks
take longer to stop - no matter how slow they are going.
- Be aware and don't
hurry to cross in front of a bus or truck.
Large
vehicles have blind spots. Practicing safety tips will keep you out
of them.
