The American Traffic Safety
Services Association (ATSSA) reports 868 lives were lost in 1999 in
work zones, and the numbers are growing every year. Many states have
increased publicity regarding work zone safety in attempts to highten
driver awareness of the problem.
All road construction crews
are required to follow federal standards for traffic control devices
that regulate, warn and guide road users.
According to the Federal
Highway Administration:
- The percentage of fatal
work zone crashes occuring on urban interstates was more than twice
the percentage of all fatal crashes occuring on urban intersections
(14 percent compared to 6 percent).
- For fatal large truck
crashes, the percentage of work zone crashes occuring on urban interstates
was twice as high compared to all fatal truck crashes (20 percent
vs. 10 percent).
- Approximately 3,000 people
were injured in large truck work zone crashes in 1998.

Please
keep in mind work zones are full of people working to improve
