Gate valves are commonly used when minimum pressure loss and a free bore is required. When fully open, a typical gate valve has no obstruction in the flow path. The valve has to be manually turned multiple times to go from closed to open. This slow operation prevents water hammer effects, but is not able to be operated as quickly as a Butterfly Valve or Ball Valve .
